BIG MONEY SAVING Tips - Heating - Drywall - Windows - Insulation

So you need a new roof?  This isn't a corporate sponsored Roofing for Dummies thing but it will save you money!

Let's look at a small home.

Let's say it has a 6-12 pitch roof and the home measures only 24 feet wide by 40 feet long.

When I called and asked a few Home Hardware Building Centers / Centres what they recommended I would need for this home here is what Home Hardware recommended.

Drip Edge or Starter Strip

Home Hardware recommended starter strips should be used all around the edges of my roof.  That's about 140 feet of starter strip.  Home Hardware Building Center or Home Hardware Building Supplies charge $3.69 for a 10 ft. starter strip.

That's $52.00 plus tax Home Hardware wanted of mine that I wouldn't need to spend.

Ice and Water Shield

Ice and Water Shield

Home Hardware recommended I should use Ice and Water Shield across the bottom three feet of my roof.  Two stores told me that would be the minimum they would use but suggested that two strips wide would work best.  Home Hardware Building Centre charges $75.76 for a 65 foot roll of Ice and Water Shield.

That's another $227.28 plus tax for those 3 rolls Home Hardware wanted of mine that I wouldn't need to spend.

15 Pound Roof Felt or Tar Paper

When I asked Home Hardware Building Centers or Builders Centres or Building Supplies what do I put on the rest of the roof before I shingle I was told 15 pound roofing felt or tar paper as most of us refer to it should be used.  Home Hardware charges $33.97 for a roll of 15 pound roofing felt paper or tar paper and told me it covers 144 sq. ft per roll.  They were polite when they told me 6 rolls were needed.  When I asked how I install it I was told to use a hammer stapler which costs about $50 bucks.

And there was another $253.82 plus tax for those 6 rolls that Home Hardware wanted of mine that I wouldn't need to spend.

Roof Vents

I asked about vents and got mixed recommendations from the Home Hardware stores I called.  One Home Hardware told me about every four feet is good and that I would need them on both sides.  That's 20 roof vents.  Another Home Hardware said at least four would be required.  Another Home Hardware suggested I might want to think about new vented soffit as well.  Home Hardware charges $10.99 per roof vent.

And there was another $219.80 plus tax for 20 roof vents I didn't need.

Roof Vent Overkill

Roof Vent Hint:  Remember you pay the heating bills and repair cost.  Home Hardware Building Centre keeps helping you spend more money.

This kind of advice is misleading and can lead to very expensive repairs in the future. Not just roof repairs but wet insulation, additional heating expense, and mold.  The mess from tearing out your ceilings and drywall.  All that dirt.  Ceilings to replace.  Drywall dust everywhere.  And who's going to prime and paint?  Every roof vent is a dinner out or a movie unseen.  Enjoy life!  Nobody should have to deal with this every few years.

Needless Roofing Expense Total

Now let's add the extras up.  Home Hardware self-proclaimed experts were telling me to spend over $750.00 plus tax more than I needed and that's without even adding in the suggestion for vented soffit.

How many homeowners buy roofing materials at Home Hardware?  Times the number of homes per year by the suggested $750.00 of Home Hardware add on sales.    Cha Ching, cha ching ! ! ! !

Roofing Truth

If you have ever seen new homes being built you may have noticed the roof gets sheeted and the shingling begins.  Perhaps you've noticed that.  The roof on my parents 43 year old home has never leaked.  It has only needed to be replaced once.  It was shingled with one inch of the shingle overhanging all edges of the roof.  There was never water damage, or ice damage, and never a stained ceiling.

Shingles are designed to stop water from entering your roof and have for years.  Simply shingle your roof correctly.

My Recommendations

We all dislike pushers and I recommend buying your materials from businesses I've found to be trustworthy.  Rona, Timbr Mart, Tru-Value and other stores are where I shop.  I avoid businesses with thousands of television ads every day as it's your money and mine that paid for them.

Be certain to check out my article on Roof Valley if you have a valley on your roof.
